Why Palin’s daughter is a political issue
A lot of people are saying that we should just shut up about Brstol Palin — that she’s a child, that she doesn’t deserve to be in the political spotlight. But they’re missing the point.
Sarah Palin is a moralist — she believes that condoms, birth control and sex education are wrong. Not just wrong, sinful. It’s ideas like that which are making the AIDS epidemic in Africa worse — it’s the Christian right that’s telling Africans that condoms don’t work. Abstinence, she and her compatriots say, is the only thing that works. She wants to teach creationism in school and she wants to impose the evangelical movement’s interpretation of “God’s Law” on the rest of us.
But like Reverand Ted Haggard who preached hate against gays but was gay himself, Sarah Palin is a hypocrite. She preaches against pre-marital sex, yet her daughter is pregnant and unmarried. The reality is that pre-marital sex is going to happen, as it has throughout most of human history. But rather than give kids the tools they need to protect themselves, the Sarah Palins of the world tell them that condoms aren’t safe, that birth control doesn’t work.
And then those kids get pregnant — and then their kids get pregnant.
I’m tired of people like this running the country. Haven’t they been discredited enough all ready? Why do we even bother to treat them like they have a legitimate claim to the government? Their perfect world policies don’t work in the real world.
